What is Hair Transplantation?
A hair transplant is a surgical procedure which transfers a patient's own hairs from a donor area to areas of the scalp that are undergoing hair loss or thinning. The donor area is often the back or sides of the head and these hairs are genetically programmed to be permanent. As such, once these donor hairs are moved during the hair transplant procedure , they will continue to grow for a lifetime. While there are many different hair transplant techniques, some of the best results obtained today use the technique of follicular unit grafting. A follicular unit is the term used to describe the natural groupings of one, two, three and occasionally four hairs.
Because this is how hair grows naturally in the scalp, follicular unit grafting often provides the most natural results. During a hair transplant utilizing this technique, as many as 2500 grafts can be transplanted in a single session. Hair transplantation is a very afe, relatively minor surgical procedure. The transplanted hair seen above the scalp will initially be shed, and the roots will remain dormant for 6-12 weeks. After this period, the new hairs will all begin to grow.
How hair transplantation is done?
Our Hair transplantation involves removing a strip of permanent hair-bearing skin from the back or sides of the scalp (donor area) and then, using various techniques, the strip is usually dissected into micrografts (containing 1-3 hairs) and mini-grafts (containing 3-8 hairs) each. The micro-/minigrafts are then meticulously planted into the bald or thinning area of the scalp (recipient area). The creation of very small micrografts (follicular units) has allowed very natural, feathered hairlines to be grafted, and avoids an brupt, "pluggy look" that was typical many years ago. A mini-graft is used behind the hairline for added density.
